NEW YORK, Dec. 19, 2023 -- Neurosteer Inc. announces the publication of our groundbreaking paper in

detailing a revolutionary approach to Parkinson's disease detection and differentiation using our pocket-sized hdrEEG™ system and a rapid 15-minute auditory assessment.disorders.

The study was performed using Neurosteer’s FDA cleared medical-grade hdrEEG™ system which represents a breakthrough in brain “scanning” and offers a completely novel approach to analyzing brain activity.

The system is designed to support early detection and differentiation of neurodegenerative disorders and continuous brain monitoring in the ICU.disorders.

Neurosteer’s wireless, pocket-sized, medical-grade wearable device, with its innovative forehead-attached electrode adhesive strip, can be used anywhere. It is low cost, massively deployable, automatic and objective.

In conjunction with the device, our noninvasive, 15-minute auditory brain health assessment was used in the study for the detection of Parkinson's disease.

Paired with our cloud-based signal processing server, our system showed excellent correlation to F-DOPA PET scans in detecting and differentiating Parkinson’s disease, for a fraction of the cost, in a simple to operate, noninvasive, 15 minute procedure that can be performed virtually anywhere.

By contrast, today’s Parkinson’s disease assessments using F-DOPA PET scanners are invasive, cumbersome, and extremely expensive, and require a dedicated facility and subjective interpretation by clinicians. As a result, they are only performed after the onset of symptoms, by which time it may be too late for effective treatment.

Preliminary data suggests similar promise for Alzheimer’s disease, making it ideal for patient screening to benefit from recent Alzheimer’s drugs.

The company intends to establish a new standard of care in brain assessment and revolutionize early detection of Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s and other neurodegenerative disorders.

NEW YORK, Sep. 1, 2023 -- Neurosteer founder and CEO, Nathan Intrator PhD, has been invited to be a main speaker at the ApplySci AI + Deep Tech + NeuroTech conference at MIT later this month.

On September 18 at 11:30am, Intrator will demonstrate Neurosteer’s breakthrough hdrEEG™ technology in support of his presentation titled “Brain Wellness and Very Early Detection of Neurodegeneration.”

This will be the first time the company presents its connectivity analysis, which has historically been performed by an fMRI. But unlike the room-sized fMRI scanner, Neurosteer’s low-cost hdrEEG system uses just a wireless, wearable, pocket-sized device in conjunction with an innovative adhesive forehead dry-gel electrode strip.

And unlike an fMRI, which measures blood flow as an indirect proxy for brain activity, Neurosteer’s system directly measures electrical brain activity with much higher resolution, and then utilizes cloud-based signal processing to detect pathway connectivity changes that occur with different neurodegenerative disorders.

Intrator will describe the changes related to early Parkinson's and Alzheimer's, and how the company’s breakthrough technology can distinguish between different disorders.

NEW YORK, Nov. 3, 2022 /PRNewswire/ -- Neurosteer Inc. today announced the FDA clearance of its Neurosteer® single-channel EEG brain monitoring platform. This clearance allows Neurosteer’s unobtrusive multi-purpose system to be used in a broad range of clinical settings. In the ICU, it can offer continuous brain monitoring to support critical interventions. In a doctor’s office, it can aid in the early detection of pre-symptomatic cognitive decline, including Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s and dementia. And in pharma drug trials, it can assist in the rapid and cost-effective massive screening of subjects who may be suffering from neurodegenerative disorders.

Neurosteer advances the century-old EEG into the 21st century, using an adhesive electrode strip connected to a pocket-sized sensor that wirelessly transmits EEG data to the cloud for advanced signal processing. Using just a single adhesive forehead strip, Neurosteer’s innovative solution offers the traditional EEG frequency bands while also being cleared by the FDA to include several novel “brain metrics” visual representations.

These brain metrics rely on Neurosteer’s advanced signal processing technology and may assist trained medical staff in making neurological diagnoses. In addition, affixing the adhesive strip to the forehead avoids interference from the hair, and using dry gel supports unattended operation for up to 12 hours. Finally, the system includes a noninvasive assessment with auditory prompts that can aid in the early detection of brain deterioration.

Israeli Scientists Say Brain Analysis Tool Can Spot Cognitive Decline – Using Music

A Tel Aviv University PhD student, Neta Maimon, came up with a 15-minute test that supports early detection of cognitive decline. The test uses musical cues in conjunction with Neurosteer’s EEG brain monitoring system to track brain function as elderly people listen to music.

Doctors today rely on face-to-face questions and answers to diagnose cognitive decline, but new peer-reviewed research suggests music may help make EEG-based testing viable.

Israeli scientists say they have developed a warning system for cognitive decline, which works by tracking brain function as elderly people listen to music.

With a three-electrode pad attached to their heads, people undergoing the test are asked to complete tasks, such as pressing a button when a particular instrument plays.

The pad is attached to a machine, which monitors brain function. An algorithm analyses the data to determine whether or not the brain function suggests that cognitive decline is underway, and if so, to what extent.

A Tel Aviv University PhD student, Neta Maimon, came up with the new 15-minute test, which has been trialed on dozens of elderly people in newly peer-reviewed research. The same people also underwent testing using standard assessment for cognitive decline, and the results from both tests largely matched.

She believes that after further development, assessment and regulatory approval, the test could “improve the quality of life of millions around the world” by providing more accessible screening than today’s cognitive tests, which are labor-intensive for doctors and normally reserved for people who already have concerns. Largely automated, she said that hers could be used as a routine test.

Cognitive decline relates to difficulties, beyond what are typically expected in aging, in a person’s brain functions such as thinking, memory and concentration.

“Our method enables the monitoring of cognitive capability and detection of cognitive decline in the early stages. It could do so by simple and accessible means, with a quick and easy test that can be conducted in any clinic,” Maimon said.

“Screening tests are commonly accepted for a variety of physiological problems such as diabetes, high blood pressure and breast cancer. But to date, no method has yet been developed to enable routine, accessible monitoring of the brain for cognitive issues.”

The study took place at Tel Aviv University’s School of Psychological Sciences and the Buchmann-Mehta School of Music, under the supervision of Prof. Nathan Intrator from the Blavatnik School of Computer Science and the Sagol School of Neuroscience.

Doctors normally diagnose cognitive decline by a face-to-face assessment that involves questions and tasks. There is a more objective method, but it involves a painful and invasive procedure to remove spinal fluid for testing. There is significant research toward a noninvasive objective method, some of it focused on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) or scalp electroencephalogram (EEG), but no such method is in widespread use today.

Maimon uses an EEG machine to analyze the electrical activity in the brain as people complete her music test. A combination of the brain activity patterns and data on how quickly people completed tasks, like the button press when a particular instrument plays, gives scientists a strong indication of cognitive status.

The test uses an unusually-compact Israeli-made EEG machine, produced by the Neurosteer startup, which is headed by Intrator. Maimon says using a portable device makes her approach viable for mobile testing in elderly homes and clinics.

Maimon said that the approach needs further development and assessment, but could hold great potential.

And the winner in Roche and SNC’s Alzheimer’s Innovation Challenge is… Neurosteer, who has developed a solution designed for the early detection of a variety of neurological disorders. The solution aims to bring EEG tests to the patient’s home with a wearable device and a cloud-based system that together provide real-time monitoring and assessment of brain activity. The wearable, attached to the patient’s forehead, monitors cognitive and emotional activities. The information is gathered in the cloud, where it is being processed and assessed using AI and machine learning techniques. The insights are relayed to the patient and the care-giver in the form of neuro-feedback or alerts.

Neurosteer has developed a three-electrode neurological monitor that provides multiple brain activity biomarkers.

Neurosteer has the mission to improve the quality of brain disorder care by creating meaningful and easy-to-use brain activity measures that provide immediate neurofeedback as well as general brain activity assessment. The company produces high-level brain activity biomarkers in real time which enable treatment improvement by affordable and continuous monitoring of neural activity.

The mobile monitor can be used next to a hospital bed or at home and provides assessment and monitoring, with real-time alerts.

           The Activity of the Brain

Automatic and accurate brain monitoring is key for optimised treatment both in the clinic and at home. For example, in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), it can help prevent secondary trauma due to epilepsy or oedema, and in the operating room, it can reduce post-operative cognitive decline. Similarly, monitoring of home-care patients can indicate drug compliance and effectiveness, and provide a general indication of neural activity without the presence of a neurologist.

The current focus of Neurosteer is neurodegenerative diseases and mood disorders, as well as various forms of epilepsy, and the main effort is devoted to assisting with drug development and neurostimulation optimisation. For clinical trials and preventive medicine, Neurosteer can provide affordable patient screening and monitoring as well as quantification of the response to neurological and psychiatric drugs.

The system uses proprietary, real-time algorithms which run on the cloud and produce biomarkers that can be read using any web interface. The biomarkers are associated with various forms of cognitive load, emotional states, stress, pain, abnormal (epileptic) activity, disorders of consciousness, sleep stages and level of anaesthesia. Importantly, the biomarkers do not require electroencephalography (EEG) expert interpretation, thereby saving time and reducing costs. Objective statistics, trends and historical data are available for a single patient or a group of patients. The historical data can be easily integrated with other analytics tools used for better trial management.

Neurosteer’s core technology was developed at Tel Aviv University, Israel, by co-founder and CEO Nathan Intrator. Intrator received a PhD in applied mathematics from Brown University, US, and is a professor (on leave) of computer science and neuroscience at Tel Aviv University. He studied the signal-processing capabilities of sonar animals and developed signal-processing methods for brain activity interpretation and brain-computer interfaces, most notably for extensive information extraction from a single EEG channel. Neurosteer commercialises this technology to provide mobile brain analysis with medical and wellness applications.

Neurosteer has already helped a number of patients and their families – specifically, assisting caregivers in their assessment and providing a clear response to physical and other stimulation. In addition, the system is being used for assessment of Parkinson’s disease and frontotemporal dementia (FTD) patients. Moreover, the system provides indication of the response to transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) and deep brain stimulation (DBS).

Matthieu Ricard is one of the Buddhist monks that is most studied by Neuroscientists. His compassion meditation was contrasted with Indian breathing and mindfulness meditations by leading researchers. Matthieu joined Professor Steven Laureys for meditation and dialogue. Neurosteer monitored the brain activity during his compassion meditation, which looks very different from other meditations. We are excited to see a shift from multiple electrodes and fMRI to our single EEG channel.

The Parkinson Therapy Center in Brescia attracts patients from all over the world (many under 60) for a week of training to live with the disease. The neuropsychologists at the center are using Neurosteer’s frontal lobe cognitive assessment to suggest specific therapies to the different patients. Here is a short broadcast demonstrating this exciting project on Italian television.

Neurosteer in a tDCS Study at Langone Hospital

Neurosteer started a clinical study at Langone Hospital, NYU with Prof. Leigh Charvet, on quantifying the effect of tDCS on Multiple Sclerosis (MS) patients. MS patients receive a frontal lobe stimulation to improve their cognition. Such stimulation is not always effective, and often patients receive 20 stimulation sessions to discover at the end that there was no effect. Neurosteer’s device will assess the effectiveness of the stimulation after one session and this will be correlated with the effect after 20 sessions. Such an assessment can provide an indication of the effectiveness of the treatment.
